On the whole, I hate Facebook and I think it is evil. That being said, I have a Facebook and I check it multiple times a day. I try to tell myself the only reason I have it is to keep in touch with people and stay in the "loop", but really it is a tool which I use to value myself against others. Everytime I post a status, I try to think of how many responses I'll get. My self esteem is tied directly to people's responses or lack of responses. I get a knot in my stomach, anticipating if and when one of my "friends" will comment. Facebook is destroying my sense of self, but I cannot seem to live without it. I crave it, and I have a hard time refraining from it. I feel like I will miss something important without it.
Q: Why has Facebook become so important in today's society?
I have very similar feelings about Facebook. I feel it takes up way too much time in my life and although I have been overexposed yet, there is always that fear that it could happen. For the longest time I said I would never get a Facebook, but of course I did. So then when I got it I said I would only use it to stay in touch with friends who have gone away to school or have moved, or family members that aren’t in the area. I also said that I wouldn’t put any pictures on it; they would only come from other people. Well once again, this isn’t the case…I am friends with people I see just about every day and I have uploaded pictures. I also said that my page would be lucky if I looked at it once a week, if that and now I check it at least once every day. And as for comments, yea sometimes I post stuff with the hopes that certain people with see it and either make a comment or says something to me face to face about it….it’s bad I have to agree to some degree I do let it control my life.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think it is important in society I think it is an addiction. We always want to know what people are doing and we are always trying to get ourselves involved. One addictive factor for many users is the availability of games…I bet many users feel like they have to play all the time in order to try to beat their high score and others high scores. What’s made it even worse and what I think may make it seem like it is important in society is the fact that now business are using it to promote themselves and there is all sorts of other types of media available through Facebook. It’s as if it has become a search engine for everything and anything.
Question:
How drastically do you think our lives would change if Facebook was shut down?? How “lost” would we be without it??
I feel that you should try and delete your account, if it is that much of an emotional harm to yourself. Having a Facebook is a personal choice, that's awful that you feel that way!
